Pet food makers rethink their protein mix

Rising animal protein costs are pushing formulators toward blended protein systems, without giving up label claims.

Pet food formulators are spreading their protein across more sources. Instead of relying on one or two animal meals, more recipes now combine poultry, marine, plant and novel proteins to hold nutrition targets while managing cost and availability.

Pea, faba and potato proteins continue to grow, and insect meal is appearing in more treat and premium lines. Hydrolysed proteins are gaining ground in sensitive-stomach and veterinary diets.

The challenge is keeping the label clean and the palatability high. Blended systems need careful specification so that amino acid profiles and digestibility stay where they should.

We supply animal, plant and novel proteins through one desk, which makes it simpler to test and switch between them as prices move.
